How to Get Full Refund Flight Ticket at Trip.com

Cancelling and getting refunds for travel plans is crucial when facing unexpected issues in travel arrangements. I'm a frequent traveler, so I try to avoid risk as much as possible, and sometimes I use the system well. So due to the change in travel schedule, I would like to share with you what happened between yesterday and today.

1. Why Did I Booking Flight Ticket through Trip.com?

I made a plan with 4 colleagues to go on a trip to Mongolia for about a week in mid-June 2024. After much discussion about when exactly to schedule the trip, I decided to go from June 13 to 19. (Actually, there were a lot of ups and downs here, but today's topic is how to refund the entire plane ticket on Trip.com  so I'm going to talk about coordinating my opinions on the itinerary next time.

So we agreed on the travel schedule at 1 a.m. on May 14th, and decided to search for the lowest price ticket by searching for the flight through 'Skyscanner'. I was able to check several ticket sites earlier, but I decided to pay at Trip.com, which was often used when booking a hotel after forming a cheaper price range.

We cannot see an inch ahead of us. Therefore, sometimes booking a plane ticket a long time ago requires some risk. However, with the travel date about a month away, I was confident that I would be able to get on the plane, and my colleagues and I fell asleep happily after booking the plane ticket.

2. Reasons for Travel Cancellation

The next day, the leader of our travel team contacted me. She said that the date of the trip should be changed. (This trip was not just a trip, but it had some promotional marketing work, and I think there was a part of her schedule that she had not thought of.)

My team members and I anticipated that canceling a plane ticket on Trip.com would not be easy. This is due to the fact that most booking websites offer us the lowest price and allow us to make reservations with the condition that it is non-refundable.

However, the flight ticket from Korea to Mongolia was about $370 per person, and we have to get a refund on this ticket and make a reservation on another schedule.

My flight reservation Case

3. Refund Policies at Trip.com

If you have already checked in and reserved seats, please cancel the check-in and seat using the method you used for the existing check-in. You can change it after the check-in cancellation is completed.

The availability of flight cancellation follows airline policy, and if you would like to request flight cancellation, please select the ticket from all reservations and refer to the following situation.

  • Voluntary cancellation (My Case)

If you want to cancel a ticket you haven't used yet, please find a ticket that requires a cancellation request and select a flight with your passengers to request cancellation.

Cancellation of a ticket may incur a corresponding cost according to the ticket regulations. Also, once canceled, it cannot be reversed again.

If the cancellation cost is confirmed immediately, it will be processed immediately after request.

If the cancellation cost is being checked, we will inform you by checking the cancellation cost on TripCOM after request.

  • Cancellation due to involuntary fluctuations

You can check the flight status by clicking on the real-time flight inquiry and entering the flight name through [Customer Status]. If the flight changes, please select the appropriate ticket and request cancellation due to the flight change. Detailed request results are subject to airline regulations.

If the cancellation fee is shown as "free" (pictured), the reservation can be canceled free of charge, and after requesting cancellation, Tripcom will immediately process the cancellation and inform you by e-mail.

If the cancellation fee is confirmed, the reservation cannot be canceled free of charge, and if you want to continue to cancel, please cancel according to the existing ticket cancellation regulations. (Please refer to the voluntary cancellation.)

Difference in ticket reservation

  • Booking directly from the airline

Each airline has different regulations, but in some places, cancellations or changes are possible within 24 hours. However, if you paid for an irrevocable flight, it is difficult to refund or change it in full after purchase because it is issued immediately.

  • Make a reservation at Trip.com

Last night, when I paid for the flight ticket, the payment amount was withdrawn from my credit card. And on my iOS app, it said 'Ticketing is on'. This means that it is still 'booking at the same time as the flight attendant's payment', and it is before the airline confirms it. That way, I was able to buy time for a refund. (This is not a trick. It was actually a really urgent flight change, and I found out this time that there was a time-term for 'ticketing.')

4. My Experience and Tips

It will take some time for the 'ticket' to be completed. The time I booked a ticket was 1 a.m., and the time our team leader told me to cancel it was 1 p.m. I was determined to pay a cancellation fee because it had already passed a long time, and I was discouraged.

However, when I entered the My Page section of the application, my reservation details were not processed yet. However, I was scared because it said, 'If you cancel after processing, you may have to pay a fee', but I pressed the 'Cancel' button because it said 'Cancel' was in place. This was because in the 'Cancel' situation, no fee was paid even if I cancel.

To be precise, "Cancellation before ticketing" has a provision that says the payment will be fully refunded to the payment method within 7-15 business days, so I decided to believe it.

However, here was the phrase, "However, if the cancellation of the reservation is unsuccessful, the ticket will be issued and please request a refund according to the flight cancellation regulations."

So I canceled the reservation immediately without looking back, and about an hour later, I got an email.

"Your flight reservation has been canceled." And the refund amount will be refunded immediately, and it may take more time depending on the bank or credit card company.

I think you can get a refund without worrying if you use the time difference before the actual issue is issued. However, I tried to contact the customer center through the app by pressing the cancel button, but I couldn't connect to the consultation staff other than "change the schedule", and I was told to read the regulations on the web page repeatedly, which made my mind a little uneasy.

5. Additional Considerations

If you cancel 91 days before departure, Korean Air and Asiana Airlines will give you a 100% refund on any ticket. The more imminent the departure, the more expensive the cancellation fee will be. LCC airlines sell tickets with the condition that promotional fares, such as "super low" or "special price," are non-refundable. That's why you must consider this point before purchasing.

If there is a possibility of a change of mind when buying a flight ticket, avoid paying late at night and pay around 1 a.m. like me. Airlines often give you a free, full refund if you cancel within 24 hours, so if you booked at 11 p.m., you only have an hour to review. However, keep an eye on the fare regulations so that you don't get confused because the regulations are different.

6. My Conclusion

In the past, there were many questions from people who were worried that Trip.com was a reliable site. However, it has been operating well and is still used by many people. Sometimes, this place sells much cheaper tickets than other sites. (In particular, in the case of Greater China, I felt that hotels were cheap.) So, I hope it will be a good reference if you have to review the regulations carefully when purchasing a ticket and cancel or change the ticket within the 'time limit' I told you.
